Social Media latest news: WhatsApp

WhatsApp is suing the Indian government. The Facebook-owned platform took legal action over new social media rules that would remove encryption of messages and enable “mass surveillance.” Today is the deadline for the major tech companies to comply with the drastic changes.

Social Media bookmarking: Pinterest REVIEW

I had been using Pinterest for at least 10 years. Pinning and creating many great articles, DIY, Fashion and variety of interesting bookmarks. At some point, I was pleasantly surprised that my pins had been reaching about 140k hits a month! Besides, I had over 4k followers!

However, social media is finiky as I found out this morning. I had noticed recently, their analytics had started dropping drastically towards the end of September. And guess what, today my account doesn't even EXIST!!! Thank, but no thanks Pinterest for your betrayal for all the hard work I had done and TRUSTED your platform with my bookmarks.

Luckily, I had started my own way of keeping tab of various topics in my private bookmarks. Which reside on my external hard drive. No one can erase them at all. They are there and very easily accessible, besides I can refer to them anytime I want, without getting lost in so many boards. They are organized the way I really like to access with my own notes.

What's your experience with Pinterest platform? Recently I had also noticed that, when I wanted to pin, there wasn't a "P" button, instead they had "linked-in" and/or "reddit" icons.

Pinterest forced me to sign up with the same email that I had already signed up so many years ago. So at this point, I'll not pin anything. I'll just search and privately get the information and build my own reference. It looks as if they want for some of us to start from square one. However, I only fall once. Pinterest isn't reliabe and there is no way of going back to using it. Only to search of what I might need and that's about it.

Which platforms or ways of bookmarking work for you?

Quantum computers and encrypted messages

Quantum computers could crack today's encrypted messages. That's a problem

We'll likely see the top picks for safer, post-quantum encryption technology early in 2022.

When these machines will be able to crack conventional encryption is an open question. But the safe money suggests it won't take long.

Businesses and woke corporate politics

The Price of Woke Corporate Politics

A new ad campaign targets Nike, Coca-Cola and American Airlines.

Some of America’s most prominent CEOs have been getting political, as in woke political, and perhaps they figured it was cost-free. They are now learning the hard way that it isn’t, as a national advertising campaign targets their brands and credibility.

The campaign launched Tuesday by Consumers’ Research, a conservative nonprofit, takes aim at Nike, Coca-Cola and American Airlines. But others could be the targets, says Will Hild, executive director of Consumers’ Research. The 30-second spots will air on national cable news, as well as “in local markets where the companies are headquartered,” the nonprofit said. One source says the overall ad buy could be up to $13 million....

Comments from readers:

"Go woke, go broke"

Trader Joe in the USA just fired an employee for not taking a vaccine. I have heard people swear they will never, ever step foot in a Trader Joe store again in their life. The NBA is getting just half the supporters since it went woke. The big TV media company ratings have crashed since they became woke propagandists. The Oscars have become a non event to most people since Hollywood embraced virtual signalling.

Big business should stay out of politics and wokeness. It has no upside and huge downside.

Like Voldemort, Ransomware Is Too Scary to Be Named

Wary of alarming investors, companies victimized by ransomware attacks often tell the SEC that “malware” or a “security incident” disrupted their operations.

The Extortion Economy: How Insurance Companies Are Fueling a Rise in Ransomware Attacks

Even when public agencies and companies hit by ransomware could recover their files on their own, insurers prefer to pay the ransom. Why? The attacks are good for business.

Aug. 27, 2019,

As ransomware attacks crippled businesses and law enforcement agencies, two U.S. data recovery firms claimed to offer an ethical way out. Instead, they typically paid the ransom and charged victims extra.

From 2015 to 2018, a strain of ransomware known as SamSam paralyzed computer networks across North America and the U.K. It caused more than $30 million in damage to at least 200 entities, including the cities of Atlanta and Newark, New Jersey, the Port of San Diego and Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles. It knocked out Atlanta’s online water service requests and billing systems, prompted the Colorado Department of Transportation to call in the National Guard, and delayed medical appointments and treatments for patients nationwide whose electronic records couldn’t be retrieved. In return for restoring access to the files, the cyberattackers collected at least $6 million in ransom.
